Mission: The Hoover Library program’s goal is to prepare students to become life-long learners and to be effective users of information.

The Hoover Library program:

  • Encourages students to enjoy reading and appreciate literature,
  • Provides access to a wide variety of materials,
  • Teaches students information literacy skills.

Library Skills Taught

Kindergarten:
Classes come to the library for 30 minutes once a week. Students listen to a story and are allowed to check out one (1) book.

Skills:

  • Listen quietly to a story.
  • Use a shelf marker.
  • Identify parts of a book.
  • Understand some library terms (vocabulary).
  • Responsibility (return items on time, care of books).

Grades 1 - 3:
Classes come to the library for 30 minutes once a week. Students listen to a story and are allowed to check out two (2) or three (3) books.

Skills:

  • Learn library rules.
  • Identify the main sections of the library.
  • Distinguish fiction and non-fiction.
  • Learn about call numbers and alphabetizing.

Grades 4 & 5:
Classes come to the library for 40 minutes once a week. Students learn and practice library skills and are allowed to check out up to four (4) books.

Skills:

  • Review library rules and regulations.
  • Identify the main sections of the library.
  • Perform searches using on-line catalog.
  • Learn main divisions of the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Learn about reference sources:
    encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, atlases, CD ROMs and the Inter




Library Collection

The Hoover school library has a wide collection of picture books, fiction, and non-fiction books. Books and materials that are in the school library have been selected to:

  • Support curriculum and enrichment instruction.
  • Provide quality literary choices and support student interests.
  • Serve a multi-cultural student body.

Donations

The library welcomes donations of books to expand and restock is collection. New books donated to the library can have a nameplate placed in the book indicating the donor’s name.

New Books

The librarian has a selection of new books identified for donation. These books are selected to enhance the overall Hoover Library collection. The following are the programs in place for acquiring new books:

  • Adopt-a-Book – Select a book for the library's collection during open house events.
  • Book Fair – Select a book from book fairs held in the fall and sprin

Used Books

The Hoover library accepts donations of used books in good condition at any time.

Upkeep

Volunteers help by:

  • Cleaning, covering and mending books to prolong their shelf life
  • Processing new books and materials
